Focus and Scope

Focus and Scope: Catalyst: Journal of Transformative Education

Catalyst: Journal of Transformative Education is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing the theories, research, and practices of education that ignite profound change within individuals, communities, and global systems. The journal serves as a premier platform for scholars and practitioners to explore how education can transcend traditional knowledge transmission to foster empowerment, agency, and social justice.

We welcome four primary types of articles:

(a) Empirical Transformative Research: Studies documenting the implementation of innovative pedagogical practices, experiential learning, or curricular designs that significantly alter student perspectives or community dynamics.

(b) Critical and Theoretical Studies: Articles exploring the philosophical foundations of transformative education, including critical pedagogy, decolonial learning, and the integration of social justice into educational frameworks.

(c) Systematic Syntheses and Reviews: Meta-analyses or qualitative literature reviews that map global trends in educational innovation, the effectiveness of novel learning models, or the long-term impact of transformative interventions.

(d) Practice Reports and Policy Analysis: Articles summarizing state-of-the-art practices, reform initiatives at local or international levels, and policy analyses that drive systemic transformation.

Core Focus Areas

The journal is particularly interested in manuscripts addressing:

  • Transformative Learning: The process of shifting "frames of reference" through critical reflection and discourse.

  • Education for Sustainability: The role of education in addressing the climate crisis and fostering ecological stewardship.

  • Inclusion and Equity: The transformation of educational spaces to embrace diversity and dismantle systemic marginalization.

  • Technology as a Catalyst: How digital innovations can expand access and deepen the learning experience rather than merely replacing traditional media. To ensure a high standard of academic rigor, Catalyst prioritizes submissions that not only describe educational activities but also provide deep analysis of the transformative outcomes—meaning, how the intervention fundamentally changed the participants' understanding of themselves or the world.
